Cebu’s youth racer becomes 1st Filipino to podium in Academy

A YOUNG Cebuano speedster William John Riley Go is making waves in the international karting scene as racing resumes after two-year hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.The 14-year-old Go just made history this month as the first Filipino to take a podium finish in the prestigious FIA Karting Academy Trophy in Genk, Belgium.Among the previous participants in the event were the likes of Formula 1 drivers Charles Leclerc, George Russell and Esteban Ocon.Go displayed his elite driving skill with three second-place finishes in the qualifying heats, securing him a second place on the grid in the Academy final.Go stayed within striking distance to Arthur Dorison of France in the 19-lap final race and ended up in second place with only 0.5 seconds gap from race winner Dorison. Guillaume Bouzar of Luxembourg placed third with a 1.074 gap.Go’s best lap in Round 1 was 54.423, while Dorison was at 54.357 and Bouzar’s at 54.430.That superb performance gave Go a great start for the season with 28 points good for second spot in the 2022 Academy Trophy standings. Dorison leads the standing with 35 points, while Bouzar is in third spot with 25.Luca Houngton of Bahrain and Jindřich Pešl of Czech Republic stand in the fourth and fifth spots with 18 and 17 points, respectively.The field had 54 starters and only 36 made it to the final race after the qualifying rounds. The 2022 FIA Karting Academy gathers unique and talented racers from 53 countries.Go, the IAME Series Asia Cadet champion and the Mini ROK champion in the Asian Karting Open Champions, will have two more rounds for the FIA Karting Academy in Italy and France.The next stop is Round 2 in Adrio, Italy from June 16 to 19.
