Drivers’ group calls for more fuel subsidies

TRANSPORT group Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston) Cebu Chapter has expressed hopes that more local government units (LGUs) will provide fuel subsidies to public transport drivers just like the Cities of Cebu and Mandaue.Piston Cebu president Greg Perez told SunStar Cebu Tuesday, March 22, 2022, that their organization welcomes aid from the LGUs amid the current excessive oil price hikes in the country.Oil companies implemented a rollback on Tuesday, March 22, reducing prices by up to P11.50 per liter for diesel, P5.50 per liter for gasoline, and up to P8.55 per liter for kerosene. However, Perez said this rollback, the first for the year, was insignificant and could not offset the high prices of petroleum products brought by 11 consecutive weeks of oil price increases.Perez said Piston is asking for an P18 decrease in the prices of oil products to offset the impact of the recent price hikes.Cebu City Councilor James Cuenco announced on Monday, March 21, that the City Government would roll out P100 million worth of financial assistance and fuel subsidies for public utility drivers (PUVs) starting next week.Cuenco said at least 5,000 PUV drivers would be given P5,000 as cash aid in response to the spiraling prices of fuel. The beneficiaries of the cash aid will not be limited to drivers who are residents of Cebu City, Perez said, as the drivers can avail themselves of the subsidy as long as they ply Cebu City routes.Piston Cebu has 150 PUV driver-members who will benefit from the initiative, said Perez. In Mandaue City, Mayor Jonas Cortes has approved the P5,000 worth of fuel subsidy that will be given to 2,500 registered tricycle drivers and operators in the city. The tricycle driver or operator must hold a valid and subsisting Tricycle Franchise duly issued by the City Legal Office in order to qualify for the subsidy.
