DUMANJUG Mayor Efren Guntrano “Gungon” Gica announced that he is supporting Vice President Leni Robredo for the presidency.Gica made the announcement on his Facebook page right after the Ceboom Grand Rally of Robredo and her running mate Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan in Mandaue City on Thursday, April 21, 2022.Gica is affiliated with the Province’s administration bloc, One Cebu, led by reelectionist Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.On his FB page, Gica said that while he truly “loves and admires” Garcia and vowed to support her reelection bid, he opted to support Robredo for president.Garcia and members of One Cebu recently expressed their support for presidential candidate and dictator’s son Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and vice presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.“I am for Gwen, and I love and admire my Governor. I will always be with her and support her because I believe she is the best governor and leader for our Province,” Gica said.Gica explained that his decision to support Robredo was also out of respect for his mother, Marna.Gica is not the only One Cebu party member who has not followed the party’s decision to support Marcos.Earlier this month, the governor’s brother, Cebu Rep. Pablo John “PJ” Garcia (Cebu, 3rd district), resigned as One Cebu’s secretary-general after the party decided to support Marcos.PJ said he supported the presidential bid of Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso and resigned to avoid “conflict of interest.”Ace still mumOn Thursday, Cebu gubernatorial candidate Joseph Felix Mari “Ace” Durano still had not announced who he would support for the presidency in the May 9 elections but said he would do so soon.SunStar spoke to Durano after Robredo paid a courtesy call on his father, Danao City Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III, at the Danao City Hall, during which he was present.Robredo was accompanied by reelectionist Cebu Vice Gov. Hilario Davide III, who has been a constant supporter of Robredo, former vice governor Agnes Magpale, and Magpale’s younger brother Joselito Almendras.When asked if he was considering Robredo to be his president, the gubernatorial candidate answered safely, saying, “I’m considering all.”Mayor Durano, on the other hand, said that despite Robredo’s visit, Barug Alang sa Kauswagan ng Demokrasya (Bakud), the political party in the fifth district of Cebu of which he is chairman emeritus, will still support Marcos for the presidency.Crowd sizeAs for the Ceboom grand rally, the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) said the organizers and the Office of the Vice President had agreed that it drew at least 120,000 people based on their last assessment at 9 p.m. Thursday.“The actual estimate was based on the aerial view, which we also agreed on based on our computation,” Lt. Col. Franco Rodulf Oriol, deputy director for operations of the MCPO, said.Rally organizer Ricky Ballesteros had earlier said the rally drew 250,000 attendees.Oriol described the rally at the North Reclamation Area (NRA) as orderly and peaceful.He said no crime incident was recorded during the rally. The MCPO recorded only one traffic incident near the venue of the rally.Oriol, however, said there where 98 individuals attended to by personnel of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, of whom 95 passed out and three were brought to the hospital due to high blood pressure.TrashThe day after the event, Mandaue City’s Department of General Services (DGS), as well as volunteers from the Leni for President Movement, cleaned up the rally site.The DGS denied allegations that it had not cleaned the area after a viral Facebook post on Friday morning showed tons of uncollected garbage at the corner of Ouano Avenue at the NRA.Engineer Marivic Cabigas, DGS head, said they had deployed 40 street cleaners at the venue by 5 a.m. on April 22.She said they prioritized cleaning the roads surrounding the area so the garbage would not hamper motorists’ movements and cause heavy traffic.“It is actually our usual process on how we clean the venues for events like this. We usually start on the roads and then the venue itself to ensure that the garbage would not cause inconvenience, especially to the commuters,” Cabigas told SunStar Cebu.The DGS, together with the volunteers who arrived at the venue at 8 am, collected around 12 tons of garbage in the five-hectare area that filled four garbage trucks.Some of the garbage collected were plastic bottles, plastic food containers and campaign paraphernalia.The Ceboom Grand People’s Rally 2.0 was the second rally of the Leni-Kiko tandem, as their first rally in Cebu took place at the Southwestern University-Phinma Gym last Feb. 24.
