Duno to fight Esperanza in US

HARD-HITTING Romero Duno makes his US return Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021 (PH time) in a six-round activity fight against experienced Ramon Esperanza at the Hilton Miami Airport in Miami, Florida.

Duno made a name for himself in the US boxing scene after a second round knockout upset of then unbeaten Christian Gonzalez, who was one of Golden Boy Promotions’ promising prospects.

Duno continued to win in the US, beating Juan Pablo Sanchez, Yardley Cruz, Gilberto Gonzalez, Ezequiel Aviles, Juan Antonio Rodriguez and Ivan Delgado.

The 25-year-old Duno finally got the biggest fight of his career in 2019 when he fought budding star Ryan Garcia, who was also one of Golden Boy’s top prospects, in a World Boxing Council Silver and World Boxing Organization NABO lightweight bout. Duno, however, got knocked out in a single round by Garcia, derailing his rising status in the US.

Duno bounced back with a first round knockout of Angelito Merin in General Santos. He’ll be making his ring return after an 18-month layoff.

Esperanza should give Duno a good sweat. The 37-year-old has a ton of experience with 42 pro bouts. Esperanza fought but lost to the likes of former world champion Jesus Cuellar, and ex-world title contenders Fernando Saucedo and Vicente Rodriguez.

Esperanza is on a seven-fight losing skid and last won in 2016 with a majority decision over Lucas Carranza.

Duno is 22-2 with 17 knockouts, while Esperanza is 22-19-1 with 11 knockouts. (EKA)
