Espina: Outstanding students

THE Zonta Club of Cebu 1 had the awards rites of its education and leadership project, the “Outstanding Graduates,” in coordination with the Severiana Garcia Foundation.

Severiana was an active Zontian in the club’s community, pre-school and scholarship projects in tandem with the equally committed past president, Inday Avila. Both left us a legacy of passionate advocacy and service.

Celebrating this year’s awards rites was a way of honoring and continuing the legacy of the Severiana Garcia Educational Foundation.

The full force of the Garcia clan during the memorable event was the manifestation of the continuing leadership of current president Gina Garcia Atienza.

Another project, the Ermita Day Care Center, was one of the first community projects of the Zonta Club of Cebu 1 after the Capitol Center chaired by past president Anita Sanchez, Amparo Rodil and Tina Bonifacio.

Thereafter, the Ermita Day Care Center housed a day care. Sewing, catechetical activities and the carenderia—with the teamwork of MCE, Merle Cunanan, Anit Verano, Flor Streegan, Inday Avila and the general membership—were in full force.

Moving on, the Zonta Club Cebu 1 slowly curbed its Education program tied up with the Department of Education and Gothong Elementary School (during past president Stella Bernabe’s term). Then, it had more linkages with other public schools— like the biggest so far, the Tulay in Talisay—under the tutelage of Zontians Matt Baguia and Rufina Tanchan.

The scholarship projects initiated by past president Flor Streegan and Rufina Tanchan, following the success of the Severiana Garcia and Tanchan Scholarship Foundations, and other linkages, solidified the award-winning Education component of the Club’s advocacy and service in education.

All the past presidents, directors and members of the Zonta Club of Cebu 1 had their own threads which wove the Consummate Tapestry of molding the young women to become good students, professionals and community leaders.
