Laurio loses in Vietnam

PRINCE Andrew Laurio failed in his bid for his first title after suffering a first-round knockout in the hands of hometown bet Van Thao Tran in their International Boxing Association (IBA) bantamweight title fight in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022.Laurio boxed beautifully at the onset of the fight and landed some crisp jabs. Tran, however, mixed it up and connected to the head and the body of Laurio. In the waning moments of the opening round, Tran landed a right hook to the body.He followed it up with a right straight that dropped the 23-year-old Laurio to the canvass. Laurio immediately stood up but was clearly dazed. He walked to the corner and was counted out by referee Hoa Binh Nguyen just a few seconds before the end of the first round.Laurio was coming into the fight with the momentum of a two-fight winning streak but Tran just caught him with a solid punch. He dropped to 12-4-1 with nine knockouts.Tran, on the other hand, won his third straight fight since suffering a loss to former world champion Billy Dib in 2019. He’s now 15-1 with 10 knockouts.
