Mandaue to implement ‘flood mitigation’ projects in key streets

THE Mandaue City Government is set to implement projects in the city’s flood-prone streets following a series of heavy rains that occurred earlier this year.

The Mandaue City Planning and Development Office (MCPDO) identified A.S. Fortuna St., particularly a portion near Rolling Hills Funeral Homes and near LH Prime; and at M.C Briones St. in Barangay Tipolo and Lopez Jaena St. in Barangay Subangdaku as the areas where they would focus this flood mitigation projects on.

Rizel Rabaca, CPDO project officer, said they will prioritize addressing these three areas as they can affect traffic in the city’s major thoroughfares.

Rabaca said they already implemented these flood mitigating measures in Lopez Jaena St. in Barangay Subangdaku and M.C. Briones St. in Barangay Tipolo.

But Rabaca said that it may take some time before they can complete these projects as they will need more funding and have to be implemented by phases.

He said there is also an ongoing construction of flood mitigation works in the area in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), which will serve as its first phase.

After these streets, Rabaca said they will start implementing flood mitigating measures at A.S. Fortuna Street starting next year with an allocation of P60 million.

But Rabaca said that for now, they can only implement band-aid solutions such as maintenance and clean up of existing drainage systems in coordination with the DPWH. / (KFD)
