Maundy Thursday taxi robbery suspect arrested, hurt in police operation

LOCAL police have arrested and wounded a 35-year-old man who allegedly robbed and stabbed a taxi driver in Cebu City on Maundy Thursday, April 14, 2022.Suspect Aldwin Codera sustained a gunshot wound after he reportedly fought off the police officers pursuing him in Barangay Lahug on Friday afternoon, April 22.Codera was pinpointed by police as the one who robbed and stabbed taxi driver Edwin Sedoria Abastillas in Barangay Lahug last April 14.Lt. Col. Maria Theresa Macatangay, Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) spokesperson, told reporters that their operatives were able to identify Codera through security camera footage they had obtained from establishments near where Abastillas was robbed and stabbed.Macatangay said Abastillas also positively identified Codera after police had shown him his photo from their rogues’ gallery.Operatives of CCPO’s Investigation and Detective Management Branch arrested Codera in Sitio Tarcom, Barangay Lahug during a hot-pursuit operation last April 22 at 2 p.m. but the suspect reportedly resisted and engaged the policemen in a shootout.Codera suffered a gunshot wound in the body and was brought to the Cebu City Medical Center for treatment.Codera told police that he had committed the crime due to financial constraints and his growing debts because of illegal drug use.Macatangay said Codera will be facing charges of robbery with frustrated homicide, illegal possession of firearms and violation of the election gun ban.
