MCWD inks deal with private supplier; 5 areas in Cebu City to get better service

FIVE areas in Cebu City can expect an improved water supply starting October 2023 as the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) inked a P20.7 billion contract with a private bulk water supplier.

Last Dec. 28, 2022, MCWD and Pilipinas Water Resources Inc. (PWRI) signed the contract for the procurement of 25,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day for 25 years that will be sourced from the latter’s plant in Barangay Opao, Mandaue City

PWRI president Victoria de la Peña and MCWD general manager Edgar Donoso led the contract signing last Feb. 3, 2023.

A desalination plant will be established within PWRI’s property in Barangay Mambaling that will benefit the residents of Barangays Mambaling, Basak, Tagunol, Pasil and Ermita.

In a press release Sunday, Feb. 12, the PWRI is expected to start supplying water to MCWD eight months from the issuance of the notice to proceed last Feb. 7.

PWRI will deliver 10,000 cubic meters of water per day in the first 19 months and 25,000 cubic meters per day in the succeeding years until the contract expires.

“MCWD has been relentless in its efforts to find new sources of potable water to address the gap between the supply and demand in Metro Cebu,” read a portion of MCWD’s press release.

The government-owned utility provider added that it is now in the negotiation stage with possible suppliers of more desalinated water.

The MCWD is also considering tapping sources outside Cebu aside from the desalinated water.
