PH destroys Malaysia, closes in on semis berth in AFF Women’s Championship

THE 2023 Women’s World Cup-bound Philippines is closing in on a semifinals spot in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship after a 4-0 beating of Malaysia last Friday, July 8, 2022, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.Sara Eggesvik immediately made an impact after coming in for Kaya Hawkinson in the eighth minute after getting hurt by a clash of heads in the eighth minute. Eggesvik scored the opening goal for the Filipinas in the 23rd minute with a long shot that was deflected by goalkeeper Nural Mazlan but went past the goal line. Mazlan aggressively complained to the officials that the ball didn’t go in but to no avail.Katrina Guillou scored the second goal in the 43rd minute after scoring from a rebound from a strike by skipper Tahnai Annis.Eggesvik turned from scorer to playmaker after orchestrating the Philippines’ next two goals.Eggesvik, who had her fifth cap for the country, assisted with a beautiful cross to Quinley Quesada, who connected with a header in the 47th minute.Eggesvik found Anicka Castañeda with a cross, in which the latter connected with a header for the Philippines’ fourth goal in the 72nd minute.Meanwhile, the Australia U-23 team thrashed Indonesia, 4-0, while Thailand defeated Singapore, 3-0.The Philippines still holds the top spot with nine points, followed by Thailand in second place with seven points. Australia is third with four points, Malaysia is fourth with two points, Indonesia is fifth with a point and Singapore is sixth also with a point.The Filipinas take on Indonesia tonight at 7 p.m., Singapore faces off with Australia and Malaysia locks horns with Thailand.
