Rama, vendors come to an agreement

CEBU City officials are expecting no more resistance from market vendors doing business at the Carbon Public Market’s ML Quezon St. side in Barangay Ermita. This after the Cebu City Government and vendors doing business in the area came to an agreement to allow the installation of railings there provided that they aren’t too near their stalls. The agreement was made following the series of incidents wherein city personnel ordered to install the railings were met with resistance by market vendors.Cebu City Market Administrator Raquel Bohol-Arce said Mayor Michael Rama initiated the agreement with the concerned vendors during an ocular inspection he conducted in the area on Tuesday morning, March 22, 2022.Arce said during the meeting, Rama and the vendors came to the conclusion that the city can install the railings provided that these are three meters away from the stalls. The vendors asked Rama to put a three-meter distance between them and the railings as a way to connect their area to the Bagsakan sa LAVO Seaside area near the Interim Market and allow them to still get customers. After they were able to come up with an agreement, Rama immediately ordered personnel from the City Engineering Section and the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) to conduct the railing installation. On Monday, March 21, tensions flared when members of the Cebu City Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification and Enhancement (Probe) team placed railings along M.L. Quezon St. near the stalls of vendors in the “bagsakan,” an area where merchandise is delivered.Rama defended the move, saying he had done it before to free up the street from any obstruction.Meanwhile, Arce and members of Alyansang Carbohanon, who opposed the redevelopment of the Carbon Public Market, will be present during the Cebu City Council’s regular session on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, to help shed light on the two violent incidents that occurred on ML Quezon St. (PAC, GDC / JKV)
