Shimura eyes drug-free status, economic zone for Daanbantayan

TOURISM development, disaster resilience, and a drug-free status for Daanbantayan town are among the priorities of Mayor Sun Shimura in his second term.He also hopes to bring investors to the northern Cebu town and open an economic zone.During the inaugural session of the Sangguniang Bayan on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, Shimura laid down his administration’s agenda, focusing on health; education; peace and order; tourism, arts and culture; social services; agriculture; disaster reduction; solid waste management; basic services and infrastructure; and poverty alleviation. For his health agenda, Shimura said they will strengthen the rural health units (RHU 1 and 3) by hiring the required number of medical personnel and acquiring relevant medical equipment to be able to provide the medical needs of the constituents. The mayor also announced that they will increase the number of scholars from 200 to 300 for the next three years. The Municipal Government will also offer scholarship for special courses such as agriculture and fisheries, accountancy, real estate-related courses and nursing. To improve the peace and order situation in the town, Shimura said the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams, the Barangay Intelligence Network and the barangay tanods will be strengthened through regular trainings, so they can help make Daanbantayan a drug-free municipality. So far, 18 of Daanbantayan’s 20 barangays have been declared drug-free.He promised support for the town’s Bantay Dagat personnel so they can continue to protect the marine protected areas (MPAs) for the benefit of the fishing sector.Tourism, arts and cultureShimura said protecting MPAs will also help boost tourism since they would attract more divers to the town. The mayor further said they will hire consultants in tourism, arts and culture who will help the Municipal Government with tourism development programs, including the preservation of historical and cultural treasures. They also plan to create a master plan for the Lanao Lake and Daanbantayan Family Park.Since Daanbantayan is prone to typhoons, Shimura said they will strengthen the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office by equipping their personnel with proper tools for rescue operations. More training will also be done to equip individuals and stakeholders in schools, barangays and puroks and help them prepare for disasters.Shimura also promised to prioritize the construction of a new Municipal Sports Complex and a new cultural center. He said the Cebu Port Authority is also set to start this month the construction of four more berthing areas in the roll-on, roll-off port in Barangay Maya with a passenger terminal and commercial center, which will cater to passengers from Leyte, Masbate and other neighboring regions. To meet their goal of becoming a city, Shimura said they must strengthen economic enterprise and viability and see to it that the financial status of the people and the economic conditions improve. So the mayor said they will work hard to invite investors to collaborate with the local government.“By this, we become sure that our employment rate will surely hit the top. With the help of the Sangguniang Bayan and Congresswoman Janice Salimbangon, we will identify areas possible for economic zones,” Shimura added.
