Sonsona returns

AFTER a four-year hiatus, former world champion Marvin Sonsona makes his ring return on Sunday, March 20, 2022 against former ALA Boy Boyce Sultan in “Misamis Oriental Bubble III” at the Marban Boxing Gym in Lumbo, Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental.Sonsona and Sultan will be fighting an eight-round welterweight contest.Sonsona became the second youngest Filipino world champion at 19 after winning the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight belt with a unanimous decision win over Jose Lopez in 2009. His reign was short-lived though, just a little over two months, after failing to make weight and relinquishing his title in his first title defense against Alejandro Hernandez.Sonsona would have problems in and out of the ring, which hampered his promising boxing career.Sonsona last fought on May 13, 2018, wherein he beat Arief Blader by unanimous decision in a fight in which he was six pounds over the contracted weight.Sultan, on the other hand, started his career as one of the promising young fighters at the ALA Gym.Somehow, his career is on a downward spiral and he’s now a gatekeeper to test young up-and-coming fighters.Sultan is coming off a unanimous decision defeat in the hands of former amateur standout Criztian Pitt Laurente.Sonsona is 21-1 with 15 knockouts, while Sultan is 10-13-1 with five knockouts. Also in the card, Marco John Rementizo (12-3, 9 KOs) trades leathers with Jerry Tomongdan (29-11-4, 15 KOs), Roslan Eco (6-0, 4 KOs) locks horns with Jason Mopon (7-14, 1 KO), Eldin Guinahon (5-0, 5 KOs) takes on Michael Camelion (11-15-3, 9 KOs), James Pagaling (4-0, 3KOs) exchanges blows with Jonathan Francisco (10-15-1, 4 KOs), Jaysever Abcede (20-10, 12 KOs) faces off with Jay R Tulinan (4-4, 2 KOs) and Andery Palmin makea his pro debut against Briel Ozaraga (2-3, 1 KO).
