MASSES and weddings will soon happen at Cebu City’s new tourist attraction: the Sto. Niño Chapel, which on its roof stands the 30-foot statue of the religious icon.The chapel was officially opened on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022, with the memorandum of agreement (MOA) inked by Mayor Michael Rama, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma and officials of Cebu2World Development Inc. (C2W), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Megawide Construction Corp. that is engaged in the redevelopment of the Carbon Public Market.Sto. Niño Chapel stands on the grounds of Cebu City’s Senior Citizens Park.The archdiocese’s legal counsel, Fr. Dan Domingo delos Angeles, said Archbishop Jose Palma signed the MOA to allow masses and weddings at the chapel.Delos Angeles said the local church will support the C2W management if it decides to hold daily masses.The Archdiocese will also support the City Government if it will hold mass weddings at the chapel, delos Angeles added.Private citizens who want to hold their weddings at the chapel must seek permission from the Archdiocese.After the MOA signing, Archbishop Palma blessed the chapel. The first mass was held at 2 p.m. Sunday and officiated by another priest. (GDC)
