This spring, “Chunhyang”—a core element of “K-Culture” that has won global admiration, the quintessence of Korean traditional culture, and an emblem of eternal love—will resonate with an international audience.

“Chunhyang” is the protagonist of a classic Korean romantic tale frequently likened to “Romeo and Juliet.” This poignant Joseon Dynasty love story, which was once highlighted on the K-pop program ‘Demon Hunters,’ has been adapted with a contemporary touch, evolving into a local traditional cultural festival that appeals to every generation.

The ‘Chunhyang Festival,’ a flagship cultural event renowned for its long history and heritage, is poised to enchant the world alongside the international popularity of K-content. The “96th Chunhyang Festival,” celebrated as Korea’s most historic, will run for seven days from April 30 to May 6, 2026, in the Gwanghalluwon and Yocheon River districts of Namwon, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea.

First held in 1931 and now marking its 96th iteration, the “Namwon Chunhyang Festival” is both the longest-running regional festival in South Korea and its most cherished traditional cultural festival. Acknowledged as a premier regional event—having earned an Excellent Festival designation from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and top ranking in the traditional arts category—it has seen sustained growth. After attracting 1.45 million visitors the previous year, it is now positioning itself to advance as a worldwide festival that draws attendees from across the globe.

Grace, Courage, Love, and Tradition: The Allure of Chunhyang Expressed in Four Themes

Guided by the aspirational motto, “Chunhyang’s Charm Enchants the World,” this year’s festival will feature a wide array of programs structured around four central themes—’Grace,’ ‘Courage,’ ‘Love,’ and ‘Tradition’—which reflect Chunhyang’s character and ideals. Attendees can partake in numerous performances, exhibitions, and interactive activities, such as the Global Chunhyang Pageant, the Chunhyang Beauty Zone, the Chunhyang Hanbok Fashion Show, the Chunhyang Memorial Rite, the Chunhyang Carnival, the Chunhyang Love Dance, and the Korea Chunhyang Traditional Music Competition.

Specifically, the “Chunhyang Beauty Zone” will be established to let visitors engage with the charm of Chunhyang, the festival’s central figure, by having beauty professionals recreate her legendary look. Through partnerships with cosmetic brands, K-Beauty experience booths will provide complimentary makeup trials, hairstyling, and accessory fittings.

The celebrated romance between Chunhyang and Mongryong will be animated in multiple venues during the festival. Offerings include “Chunmong Love Story,” where guests can immerse themselves in scenes from The Tale of Chunhyang and a classic wedding ritual, and “Love on Air,” a participatory event with a “visible radio” format that broadcasts love stories and music. Furthermore, visitors can see “Chunhyang Album: Illustration Exhibition” by artist Heukyoseok, offering a contemporary take on The Tale of Chunhyang.

Each evening, the Gwanghallu Garden, the festival’s main site, will host a series of captivating performances. A diverse mix of genres will be presented daily—including the “One-Day Spring Dream Concert” with modern Korean traditional music and popular vocalists, KBS’s “Gugak Hanmadang,” international performing groups, jazz concerts, acoustic sets, classical ensembles, and orchestras—all designed to enthrall spectators.
