SHANGHAI, Nov. 03, 2025 — The Shanghai International City and Architecture Expo took place in Shanghai from October 30 to November 1, serving as a central component of various activities commemorating World Cities Day.
The expo, a collaborative effort by UN-Habitat and the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing, Urban-Rural Development and Management, with co-organization by the Shanghai Coordination Center of World Cities Day and execution by the Shanghai Green Building Council, provided a crucial venue for the construction sector to present accomplishments, foster dialogue, and explore growth opportunities.
Spanning nearly 40,000 square meters, the expo emphasized intelligent urban and rural construction solutions alongside green, low-carbon development. It featured 6 thematic exhibition zones, 4 principal industry development areas, and various on-site events, demonstrating Shanghai’s pioneering successes and actionable strategies in city building, administration, and sustainable progress.
Within this year’s World Cities Day thematic exhibition area, three dedicated sections were designed to illustrate the 11-year evolution of World Cities Day, revisiting significant occasions like its global and China observances, and the SDG Cities Global Conferences held throughout the years.
Furthermore, it unveiled a novel framework for a series of social activities, characterized by distinct tiers and synchronized roles. The expo also championed international public assets like the Global Award for Sustainable Cities (Shanghai Award), the Shanghai Manual: A Guide for Sustainable Urban Development in the 21st Century, and the UMF-Shanghai Adapted Index Application Report, while also presenting details of several prominent case studies.
Concurrently, the event displayed project accomplishments from partners across government agencies, academic institutions, businesses, and other sectors. It showcased the inventive approaches and philosophies of various stakeholders in fostering sustainable urban development, underscoring the vital role of the World Cities Day platform in advancing global urban sustainability.
The district-level construction achievements exhibition area saw coordinated participation from Shanghai’s 16 districts and the Lingang New Area, all presenting their urban and rural construction methodologies.
Prominent industry leaders, including Shanghai Chengtou, were among the exhibitors, showcasing their core technologies and projects. Together, they illustrated the progress of new quality productive forces within the construction sector, emerging as technological focal points of the expo.
