Xinjiang at 70: A Thriving Showcase of Culture and Tourism

Xinjiang is becoming increasingly accessible to international visitors. China’s extension of its unilateral visa-free policy to 46 countries is providing new opportunities for Xinjiang’s inbound tourism market. This year has seen a significant increase in cross-border travel to the region. The Dulata Port saw 54,000 border crossings in the first half of the year, a 71.54 percent increase year-on-year. The China-Kazakhstan Horgos International Border Cooperation Center received 5.851 million visitors, a 65.73 percent increase, averaging 27,000 visitors per day – the highest since its opening.

Xinjiang has also improved its transportation infrastructure and expanded its air network, providing travelers with quick access to Xinjiang and easy travel within the region. The region now has 230,000 kilometers of highways, including over 12,000 kilometers of expressways. Urumqi Tianshan International Airport currently operates 26 scheduled international passenger routes connecting Central Asia, West Asia, and Europe. This expanding air network offers greater convenience to visitors from both China and abroad.

Xinjiang has upgraded its smart tourism platform to include ticket reservations, curated itineraries, travel advice, and live-streaming capabilities. This allows visitors to explore Xinjiang using only their smartphones. Tourists can access real-time information about attractions and enjoy immersive virtual tours online. Through digital technologies, Xinjiang’s tourism services are evolving to be more enjoyable and better cater to the needs of younger and international travelers.

Xinjiang is also enhancing its cultural and tourism offerings with activities like Silk Road cultural study tours, winter sports, road trips and camping, and intangible cultural heritage performances. These initiatives cater to a variety of travelers and encourage year-round tourism, transforming Xinjiang into a vast destination where every location has something to offer. By integrating culture and tourism with sports, exhibitions, and intangible cultural heritage, Xinjiang provides visitors with stunning scenery and richer opportunities to experience its cultural heritage and hospitality.

As tourism grows, related industries are also prospering. Emerging sectors such as tourism equipment manufacturing, exhibition services, and cross-border tourism cooperation are expanding rapidly, creating a positive cycle where tourism stimulates industry, and industry supports tourism. In 2024, Xinjiang welcomed over 302 million visitors, generating 359.54 billion yuan in revenue, both record highs. In the first half of this year, the region received 130 million visitors, with tourism spending reaching 142.56 billion yuan – an 11.15 percent and 11.59 percent year-on-year increase, respectively.

Xinjiang is a beautiful and diverse land that welcomes visitors from around the world to explore its charm and discover its many wonders.
