40 Under 40: Meet the new breed of game changers in Cebu (Tech & Innovation)

“SunStar Cebu: 40 Under 40” is a campaign by SunStar Publishing Inc. in celebration of SunStar Cebu’s 40th anniversary. The campaign identifies and recognizes 40 Cebuano individuals no older than 40 years old who have greatly influenced and contributed to their respective fields of expertise.

On the days leading up to the anniversary on Nov. 25, these individuals will be featured in separate lifestyle articles that cover each category—from Tech & Innovation all the way down to Business. A special publication release will be scheduled on Nov. 23 covering all categories and honorees.

Today, Oct. 21, meet the two candidates who have made great strides in the Tech and Innovation sector in Cebu: Denxybel Montinola and John Lery Chik. Both candidates focus on different aspects of technology and innovation, but one thing remains clear: they’ve streamlined processes that will benefit Cebuanos in the long run.

Denxybel Montinola, 26

Nuclear medicine medical physicist,

Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital

Assistant professor, College of Allied Medical Sciences

“I always make sure that I streamline the current practice in nuclear medicine and innovate with the current resources available in the facility. I hope that the culture of excellence that I am upholding and bringing into my department also inspires others to do the same so that we can keep pushing Cebu’s healthcare system towards excellence.”

Denxybel is an inspiration for all the young children who want to venture into STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) courses. At 26, he has quite the list of achievements: He graduated with a master’s in medical physics degree from the University of Sydney, was recognized and awarded as one of the ten outstanding students in the Philippines and is one of the nine youngest medical physicists in Cebu.

As a nuclear medicine medical physicist at Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital, Denxybel works behind the scenes to ensure patients receive accurate diagnosis and treatment, including the administering of appropriate radiation doses. He is often called upon to solve problems with unusual clinical presentations, and he is constantly developing new techniques to assess patients for accurate imaging.

John Lery Chik, 36

Chief executive officer, CloudKart PH

“Success starts at home. Our goal is to support households by offering an online outlet for their daily needs. CloudKart is a young organization that’s constantly trying to improve its product offerings and services.”

John Lery Chik saw a problem during the pandemic, and he moved quickly to address it. And thus, CloudKart PH was born. CloudKart is Cebu’s first hassle-free one-stop shop that allows Cebuanos to order their groceries and essentials from the comfort of their own home, thereby minimizing contact with potential carriers of the Covid-19 virus.

CloudKart created job opportunities for displaced “habal-habal” drivers during the pandemic, and partners with local farmers and suppliers to offer them an opportunity in these trying times. During Typhoon Odette, CloudKart was able to serve more than 50,000 liters of drinking water to the residents of Cebu and gave online shoppers the opportunity to add personalized messages to deliveries so they could keep in touch with their loved ones.

While Denxybel Montinola is constantly developing new techniques in the medical field, John Lery Chik is streamlining the process of purchasing groceries and other essentials through online means. Both achievements and advocacies are highly admirable in their own way, and one can only hope that there is more change and innovation to come in Cebu’s future.

Four down and 36 more to go. Keep an eye out for the next edition of “SunStar Cebu: 40 Under 40.”
