Be ‘alive’ with Justin Chan

The colors of the rainbow shine all year round as members of the LGBTQIA+ community are relentlessly working hard to spread and bring awareness to the causes that they are fighting for—their history as of the “third sex—and representing the people who have tirelessly fought to love freely regardless of their sexual orientation.Justin Angelo K. Chan is one of the many fighting hard for this cause, and in a way, is leading them. As the president of Alive, and those involved in this noble cause for equality and gender rights, it is very important for him carry out their advocacies consistently.Justin has long been an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community and, at only 23 years old, he is now leading his city’s LGBTQIA+ organization called the Association of LGBTQIA+ Individuals Voicing for Equality (Alive). Given the chance to participate to facilitate change and bring awareness to their organization’s causes, it is important to listen to the stories of the members who endured intense and harsh treatment from society, most especially families and friends.“I honestly couldn’t find the right words to describe what I feel every chance I get to hear their different stories,” Justin said.“I had felt anger, sadness and hope all in one story and multiplied that to the numerous people whom I encountered. It is truly a relatable ‘rollercoaster of emotions’ so to say.”Leading a group that fights against the worst disease of society—indifference—has a set of challenges of its own, and one of them is communication.“I say communication because there are so many factors that affect how I disseminate and deliver information effectively,” said Justin. “In my organization alone, it is sometimes difficult to execute plans because there are hindrances like factions within the circle, doubt with one (or more) of the members, cooperation issues, conflicts on schedules, members’ personal conflict and external factors.”With all the amazing work and leadership that Justin has been doing, he is incredibly thankful for the support of his parents, who are no other than Lapu-Lapu City Junard “Ahong” Chan and the city’s lone District Rep. Cindi Chan.“The support is honestly very overwhelming,” Justin said proudly, “I am beyond grateful to have them support me and what I can contribute for my community.”As the president of Alive, and constantly working hard to ensure that their fight towards equality will resonate with others, Justin is adamant in always taking a stand on issues that need to be heard—to amplify the voices of the marginalized and shed light on the oppression that they faced.“When there is hindrance, stand up for what you think is right and do so with conviction,” Justin said.Without a doubt, Justin is unstoppable. His compassion to his peers who were cut deep by the knives of indifference and oppression, leaves an indelible mark on those who were fortunate to cross paths with him. He serves not only as an inspiration to his community but also to the youth who continuously fight for the change that the world desperately needs.
