Beermen bow out from PBA Governors’ Cup, coach rues team’s ‘lack of chemistry’

SAN Miguel head coach Leo Austria said the Beermen’s lack of chemistry had a lot to do with them falling short in the quarterfinals of the PBA Governors’ Cup on March 18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.Needing a win to extend their season, the Beermen flamed out and were routed by the Meralco Bolts, 100-85, to suffer an early exit. The result was a far cry from the expectations the team and basketball pundits had for San Miguel, which reloaded its team with numerous veteran players like Vic Manuel, Rodney Brondial and Jericho Cruz.“I have no words to say regarding the game. I’m really frustrated because everybody is expecting us to do well. But we fell short of one game to get into the semifinals,” shared Austria.“We really want to get to the semifinals because it’s a series and we’ll start getting our rhythm and chemistry. It seems that chemistry is lacking in the team.”Aside from integrating numerous key pieces, San Miguel also had to contend with learning to play with three different imports. Their last one, NBA veteran Shabazz Muhammad, arrived less than a month ago. Although Muhammad had his moments, including a 57-point game against Meralco at the end of the elimination round, he was held down to just 24 on Friday, struggling against the defensive blanket the Bolts threw on him.Austria said that despite this result, the team will bounce back especially after practicing for some more time.“I know that those players can help the team,” said Austria, referring to the free agent signings. “I don’t know the effect but I love them in the team. It’s a matter of time. I think we just lacked the time for us to be a very cohesive team.”“If you think about the team, it’s almost complete. It’s a matter of time to get good chemistry. The mainstays, they tried to embrace, and the new players tried to adjust. We’re in an adjustment period, and sometimes, there’s an effect because everybody wants to be nice to their teammates,” said Austria.
