Again, I try to shy away from writing about politics, especially with the local and national elections just right around the corner.Don’t get me wrong. I have my preferences, but I’d rather keep them to myself simply because I don’t think I should espouse candidates when I am not registered to vote.Yes, I feel guilty for not exercising my right to choose the next person to lead our country or even the city.Trust me, I had filled up the necessary paperwork to get back on the system but, alas, I couldn’t overcome the next hurdle which was to haul myself to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office to have my biometrics taken.Or maybe it was something else, but either way, I failed to fulfill the requirement on time which is why I am now forced to watch helplessly as the fate of the country and the city is being decided.That’s why I’ve kept mum while the debate on the number of attendees of the two recent rallies of presidential contenders continues to rage on social media.Granted, I’ve seen the photos and videos of both events. And these came from reliable sources. By that, I mean I will even forgo one night of drinking to vouch for their authenticity. Thankfully, things don’t have to go that far since I am not registered. So bottoms up.All I can say is, judging by what I saw, both events attracted lots of people.Anyway, I woke up Saturday morning and read the news about one mayoral candidate claiming that he has received a “threat” from a rival. Although I don’t like using that last word because it would suggest that the complaining candidate has a fighting chance. Let’s face it, he doesn’t. But hey, stranger things have happened in Philippine politics.Still, according to the SunStar Cebu article I read on its website, the candidate is the first candidate in the city “to announce he has received a threat.”Now I don’t know if that means in this particular election or in the history of local elections, but I have to admit that it is my first encounter with a candidate playing the victim card, which is why I’m discussing politics even though I shouldn’t and which is why I’m keeping this brief.I mean I have so many questions like why would his opponents even care who his presidential bet is, which is hardly a threat, because let’s face it, the top two contenders in the country’s highest post are already taken by the two major contenders in the local race.Hmm. I’m intrigued.
