Cebu FC logs historic first win in pro league

CEBU FC has made history after winning its first match in the pro ranks.Just in its second year as a pro club, a new-look Cebu FC beat Stallion Laguna FC, 2-0, in its debut match of the 2022 Copa Paulino Alcantara on April 25 at the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.Striker Chima Uzoka scored the historic first goal of the club in the 33rd minute. Uzoka took the penalty shot that was awarded to Cebu FC from a foul by Kainoa Bailey inside the box. Uzoka’s penalty shot was deflected by Stallion goalkeeper Hayeson Pepito but the 23-year-old former National University striker quickly slid and struck the rebound for the opening goal.“The feeling is extremely great. I’ve always believed that I would score the first goal for CFC and I know there are many to come. I was confident about the penalty but the goalkeeper had a great save and didn’t totally save it and I followed through and got a good rebound,” Uzoka said.Robert “Papu” Corsame scored the second goal in the 90th minute, shutting the door for a Stallion comeback.“I’m very happy that we got the first three points of this tournament and our first win for the club. In our last performance in the Copa, I gave all my best to help the team but it wasn’t enough. There was pressure but I needed to stick to the plan and trust my teammates,” said Corsame, who was named Man of the Match.Corsame hit the back of the net from close range after a beautiful through pass by Daniel Gadia.Team owner Ugur Tasci was ecstatic with his team’s first win in the pro ranks.“Of course on my part, this win is so delightful, it is a good feeling, as we did not just put up the club but also the stadium. We played well last time, but it is also important to win. We know Cebuanos want us to win, they want us to score. I took that as my responsibility, so now, with the win, the pressure is off,” he said.Cebu FC is now mentored by Turkish coaches Mehmet Kakil and Levent Ozturk as part of the club’s partnership with Super Lig club Hatayspor.Cebu FC immediately moved up to fourth place with three points behind no. 1 ranked Kaya FC-Iloilo, no. 2 United City FC and no. 3 Azkals Development Team (ADT).ADT also beat Maharlika Manila FC, 3-0, last Monday night.Cebu FC will take three easy points from ADT on Thursday because the latter will be flying to Malaysia for exhibition matches in preparation for the Southeast Asian Games.
