Cheaper, fresher veggies and fruits at ‘Tugbong Tabo’

FARMERS from the mountain barangays of Cebu City have resumed selling their produce at Plaza Sugbo in front of the Cebu City Hall starting Thursday, March 31, 2022.This as the Cebu City Government has relaunched its weekly “Tugbong Tabo” two years since the start of strict quarantine protocols in March 2020 brought about by the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.Farmers from 28 mountain barangays of the city will display their produce weekly every Thursday and Friday.According to Joey Baclayon, head of the City Agriculture Office, the prices of fruits and vegetables here are P5-P10 cheaper than those sold at the Carbon Public Market since the produce are sold directly by the farmers themselves.“Ang mga produkto nga atong ibaligya, barato ug presko kay gikan gyud mismo sa mountain barangays (The products that we will sell are cheap and fresh since they come directly from the mountain barangays),” said Baclayon.Baclayon explained that the farmers are only given two days to sell their products since they also have to take care of their farms.“Gituyo nga two days para dili lang puro pagpaninda ang naa sa hunahuna sa mag-uuma, para naa silay adlaw nga moatiman sa ilang umahan (We intentionally set it at two days so that selling their produce will not just occupy the minds of farmers but also to give them time to take care of their farms),” Baclayon said. The City Government has been assisting farmers in bringing their products from the uplands down to the city by providing them with logistical support, said Baclayon. The city agriculturist further said these farmers were affected by the successive increase in the cost of oil products which also resulted in the increase fertilizers’ prices.Baclayon said the City has also provided different forms of assistance such as agricultural supplies to make sure that the farmers’ output will not be affected by the fuel crisis.
