Editorial: Philippines casts the right vote

Putin’s Russia deserves global condemnation, and this was formalized in the form of a United Nations resolution sealed by 141 nations on March 2, 2022, the third and last day of the body’s special emergency session held at its New York City headquarters. The Philippines made the right move—voting in favor of the resolution that “deplores in strongest terms the aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine” and “demands” that Russia “unconditionally” withdraw its forces from its neighbor Ukraine, which has been seeing a rising civilian and military death toll since President Vladimir Putin launched the “unprovoked invasion” last Feb. 24.The Philippine vote in the 193-member body could be seen as President Rodrigo Duterte’s stance in the Ukraine crisis even though the latter has not issued any statement, not publicly at least, on Russia’s war against its neighbor in Eastern Europe.Still aligned with democracyThe UN vote of the Philippines signifies that the country is still aligned with liberal democracies led by the United States.Brazil, curiously, voted in favor of the resolution. The country’s current far-right leader, Jair Bolsonaro, recently met with Putin.A UN member itself, Russia voted against the resolution. The country was joined by Belarus, Eriteria, North Korea and Syria. These countries are ruled by dictators and have links to Russia, so it made sense for their United Nations representatives to vote against the resolution.Notably, Russia’s ally China was among the 35 countries, including India and Iran, that abstained from voting. No vote was recorded from 13 nations, including Venezuela which is ruled by Russia-friendly dictator Nicolas Maduro.Putin could dismiss the resolution voted by 141 of the 193 UN member-nations and press on with his horrible war against Ukraine and its citizens, as General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding unlike the Security Council resolutions. However, Putin must listen to the world’s voice of disapproval of his aggressive actions. If the Russian leader is devoid of humanity, history would place him on the blood-soaked pages of infamy.
