Espina: Family and friends

“In my Diary” looks forward to many events.

The forthcoming wedding of Kenneth Derrick, son of engineer Roderick and Marivic Ngo, and Charmaine Miya, daughter of Consul Sam Chioson and Consul Emily Chioson, on Sunday, July 2, 2023, will gather close relatives and friends during the nuptial mass at the Sacred Heart Church and cocktails and dinner at Radisson Blu Cebu.

Old friend Cherry Callelero celebrated her birthday with friends from the travel group. Cherry, Alice Woolbright and I will soon see United States-based John Domingo who will visit Cebu soon. We will reminisce about old Amcham (American Chamber) days.

Well-wishers greeted Gary Muñoz, Julius Neri, Ramon Sebastian and Jun Muntuerto a Happy Father’s Day.

Fr. Hernando Coja, OAR, former president of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), celebrated his silver years as a Recoleto. I served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences during his administration where many challenging projects of formal Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (Paascu) accreditation and application for university status were successfully completed.

Fr. Raul Buhay, OAR, also celebrated his birthday. Fr. Buhay was instrumental in my conferment as hermana general from Rome.

My old friends Pilar Cusi, Tess Javier and Anita Cabinan find time to be together. Zontian Matt Baguia celebrated her birthday in between her hectic schedules as co-chairperson, education committee of the Zonta Club of Cebu 1. Birthday greetings, too, to Melanie Ng, who has always been proud of the success of her sons.

Aida Uy and Stella Bernabe are winding up their vacation abroad and we will soon have our usual lunch together. Bravo to Area 3 director Zontian Tess Chan and Zonta Club of Cebu 1 president Jane Panganiban for the well-synchronized projects on the betterment of women and children.

Adelante and laurels to USJ-R College of Commerce dean, Dr. Edgar Detuya, for his appointment as Paascu director. What a prestigious position! We Care members Gary Muñoz, Ramon Sebastian, Peter Dy, Ed Rosello, Josenian and former Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Jun Muntuerto had memorable Father’s Day celebrations.

As I always say, Cebu never rests. Life is good, indeed. There is this song of Rosemary Clooney, “Count Your Blessings instead of Sheep,” which I sing when faced with challenges. It works with God’s blessings.
