Family of slain lawyer to hold novena, mass to mark his 1-year death anniversary

FRIDAY, Aug. 26, 2022, will mark the first death anniversary of veteran Cebuano lawyer Rex Jose Mario Fernandez. The 62-year-old was shot several times while sitting on the passenger seat of his car at the corner of Duterte St. and Good Shepherd Rd. in Banawa, Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City. His only son Rex Ruben told SunStar Cebu the family doesn’t have any plans yet.He said they will simply remember Aug.26 as the day their father was killed last year.Since he and his three siblings live far apart, Ruben Rex said they will conduct novena prayers and sponsor a mass in their father’s honor. He said they recently contacted the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to follow up their father’s case.He said the NBI had taken over the cases the slain lawyer had handled before his death, while the PNP has the evidence that was gathered at the scene of his shooting.“But the NBI and the PNP continue to investigate my father’s murder even though the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 7 described it as a cold case. We were just hoping they would speed up the investigation,” Ruben Rex said in Cebuano. He said it’s not only their family but also their father’s former clients who are seeking justice for his death.“It took me almost a year to realize the important legacy my father had left behind. Recently I received many text messages, mostly from my father’s clients, asking how we were doing,” he said in Cebuano. The Cebu City Police Office described the Fernandez killing a cold case and turned it over to the CIDG 7.A cold case is “an unsolved criminal investigation which remains open pending the discovery of new evidence.”According to Lt. Col. Wilbert Parilla, deputy director for administration of the CCPO, the case was turned over to the CIDG 7 six months after there was no development. All the evidence pertaining to the case are also with the CIDG 7, he said, adding that if they come up with something new that will help the case they will immediately turn it over.
