Leni: Prove love for nation

“NO MORE Marcos, no more Duterte.”This was the statement of former Cebu City mayor Tomas Osmeña during the Cebu People’s Rally of Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo and her running mate, Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, at the Senior High School Campus Grounds of the Southwestern University-Phinma in Cebu City on Thursday evening, Feb. 24, 2022.Robredo and Pangilinan are up against the tandem of dictator’s son and namesake Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte, in the May polls.Osmeña said there is no other way to achieve a better Cebu and a better Philippines but to vote for Robredo for president. The former mayor joined the rally with his wife, Cebu City mayoral aspirant Margot Osmeña, and the slate of Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK).Robredo, for her part, advised their supporters to look or ask for receipts or proof from the other candidates who would make promises amid the courting period in the 2022 elections.“Panahon po ngayon ng kampanya, marami sa atin ang manliligaw. Wag po tayong magpapabudol. Pag panahon po ng kampyanya, maraming mangako. Pero kung meron po sa ating mangako, ang tanungin po natin, asan ang resibo?” she said.(Now is the time to campaign, many of us are courting voters. But let us not be deceived. During the campaign, many make promises. But if somebody makes a promise, our response should be, where is the proof?)“Pag nagsabi po’ng mahal ko yung mahihirap, ang dapat pong itanong natin, nung walang election, asan ka? Pag sinabing galit ako sa korapsyon, ano ang pruweba mo?” Robredo added, without mentioning any candidate.(When they say I love the poor, what we should ask is, where were you before the elections? When they say I hate corruption, what is your evidence?)The presidential aspirant assured the public that in her administration, the government funds will be taken care of, citing every centavo of her office’s budget as properly accounted for. It can be recalled that the Office of the Vice President (OVP) received the highest audit rating from the Commission on Audit (COA) in 2020, marking the third consecutive year that her office earned such a rating.COA gave the “unqualified opinion” in response to its financial report in 2020, the highest audit rating when a government office has fairly presented its financial position and has its financial statements in order, in accordance with the Philippine Public Sector Accounting Standards.Robredo reiterated that despite her office’s small budget, they have done a lot of programs and projects with the help of those who trusted them.“Ito yung klase na pamamahala na aming iniaalay para sa inyo, isang klase ng leadership na ang magaling hindi lang namumuno, pero yung namumuno tinutulungan siya ng mga taong inspirado. Tinutulungan siya ng mga taong may tiwala sa pamahalaan at gustung-gustong mag-ambag para sa kinabukasan ng ating bayan,” she said, adding that the people will certainly trust the government once it is clean.(This is the kind of management we offer you, a kind of leader who does not only lead, but a leader who is supported by people whom she inspired. People help her because they trust the government and love to contribute for the future of our country.)Citing the retrenchments during the pandemic, Robredo said her government, which she said will listen all the time, will be the one to look for and provide decent jobs for the majority and address their working conditions as well. With only 73 days left to the May 9 elections, Robredo reminded her supporters about the importance of choosing the candidates with the same vision for the country. She urged her supporters to multiply in order to end the old and rotten type of politics, saying that the decision for change is in the hands of every individual and not in the hands of politicians.Robredo noted that when she ran for office in 2016, she had almost 500,000 votes from Cebu to win the second highest position in the country. While the tandem asked for the votes of the Cebuanos, Robredo also urged her supporters to fight against fake news and disinformation circulating on social media. Also at the rally were senatorial candidates Richard “Dick” Gordon, Alex Lacson, Sonny Matula, Antonio Trillanes, and two representatives of Sen. Leila de Lima.About 10,000 to 12,000 supporters gathered at the venue on Thursday evening, said Police Major Nolan Tagsip, the station commander of the Abellana Police Station.Tagsip, however, said no untoward incidents occurred during the event.
