Magsayo makes first defense vs. Vargas

WORLD Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight champion Mark Magsayo makes his first world title defense against unbeaten former world titleholder Rey Vargas on July 9, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas.The event is one of scheduled shows that were recently announced by Showtime Sports and Premier Boxing Champions.The 26-year-old Magsayo won the WBC belt on Jan. 22 after a majority decision over longtime titleholder Gary Russell Jr. in a very close fight. Magsayo got the nod of the two judges with identical scores of 115-113, while one judge saw it a 114-114 draw. Russell admitted after the fight that he was bothered by a longtime injury before the fight.The 31-year-old Vargas held the WBC super bantamweight from 2017 to 2019 after deciding to move up in weight. He made his featherweight debut on Nov. 6, 2021 in Las Vegas and totally outclassed Leonardo Baez by unanimous decision.Vargas won the vacant WBC super bantamweight strap on Feb.25, 2017 after a majority decision over Gavin McDonnell in England. He successfully defended his belt five times, beating the likes of Ronny Rios, Oscar Negrete, Azat Hovhannisyan, Franklin Manzanilla and Tomoki Kameda.Vargas also has a long list of Filipino victims, the likes of Juanito Rubillar, Ernie Sanchez, Silverster Lopez, Vergel Nebran and Eduardo Mancito.Magsayo is 24-0 with 16 knockouts and is currently the No. 2 ranked featherweight by The Ring Magazine. Vargas, in the meantime, 35-0 with 22 knockouts and is the No. 1 WBC featherweight contender.
