Man lands in jail for ‘animal abuse’

A MAN is behind bars after he was accused of dousing a chained dog with hot water in the wee hours of Sunday dawn, February 19, 2023.

The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Jason Caparida Fuentes, a resident of Teves Compound in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City.

Police arrested him around 9 a.m.

Patrolman Glendale Cabañero, who is investigating the incident for the Mambaling Police Station, said they received the complaint against Fuentes from his neighbor, 46-year-old Gina Candia Lusido.

Lusido told Superbalita Cebu that the suspect lives with his father who is a mechanic for a taxi company in the area.

“Niuli siya ganina kadlawon unya gilapyaan ra og kalit ang iro sa akong kuya nga hiniktan,” she said.

(He arrived at dawn and he suddenly threw hot water at my elder brother’s chained dog.)

She said she found out about the incident when another neighbor told her about it. She then told her elder brother what happened.

Lusido said that when her elder brother confronted Fuentes, the latter nonchalantly told him that it was because the dog had barked at him.

Lusido said they learned that Fuentes had done the same thing to a stray cat that lived in the area the night before.

Cabañero said the suspect will be charged with violating Republic Act 8485, or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998. (BBT / PJB)
