Man runs amok after live-in partner arrives late buying bread

POLICE and members of the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) team responded to an armed person alarm in Sitio Tangkongan, Barangay Sambag 1, Cebu City past 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022.

When they arrived at the scene, they found 61-year-old Rey Pesquira alone in the house possibly armed.

Major Nolan Tagsip, chief of the Abellana Police Station, said the caller told them Pesquira had aimed his gun at his live-in partner.

Tagsip told his men to exercise maximum tolerance, while they tried to convince the suspect to surrender.

He said he first asked Pesquira’s older sister Winona Minoria to talk to him. He then gave Pesquira’s daughter a stab to pacify her father.

Tagsip said the negotiations took more than three hours.

Tagsip said they kept their guard up when the suspect finally came out. He said they were only able to take him down when Pesquira accepted a glass of water from a Swat member, which was the signal for his men to rush him.

He said the suspect was immediately taken to the hospital since he suffered from hypertension and diabetes.

Tagsip said they will charge Pesquira with alarm and scandal, disobedience and violating Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, because they found several bullets inside the house.

Minoria was at the scene because Pesquira’s live-in partner had called her crying and told her about the threat.

She tried to talk to her younger brother but he told her that it was none of her business, prompting her to ask if he was high on shabu.

Minoria said she received reports from people regarding his drug use, but no one could confirm whether this was true because they had no evidence.

Minoria blamed her younger brother’s unfortunate situation on the passing of his wife.

Police later learned that Pequira ran amok because his live-in partner took a long time to buy his bread. (BBT, PJB)
