Mandaue City Council okays wage hike for job order workers

AN ORDINANCE granting a daily wage increase of P35 to job order (JO) personnel of the Mandaue City Government was approved by the City Council on third and final reading on June 2, 2023.

Around 3,200 JOs stand to receive an additional P35 per day on top of their P380 daily compensation from Jan. 1, 2023, to Dec. 31, 2023 as soon as Mayor Jonas Cortes signs the ordinance.

City Councilor Immaline Cortes-Zafra, chair of the Committee on Budget and Finance, who authored the ordinance said they are awaiting Cortes’ approval.

Some workers, though, complained that the raise will not be enough to cover their basic necessities.

Mar (name withheld upon request), a JO worker for more than a year, said on Wednesday, June 14, that the increase is not enough for his family’s needs.

He said he has a sideline during weekends to earn additional income.

For Jaya (not her real name), a job order employee for five years, while she was happy about the increase, it still isn’t enough to pay for her house rental.

Cortes said last Saturday, June 10, that job order personnel play a crucial role in the efficient functioning of the City Government.

“They contribute their time, skills, and efforts to various departments, ensuring that our services reach the people effectively,” he said.

“Recognizing their invaluable contributions and taking into consideration the rising cost of living, we have taken this necessary step to enhance their compensation,” Cortes added.

Meanwhile, Zafra and Subangdaku Barangay Captain Ernie Manatad who is also president of the city’s Association of Barangay Councils, proposed two other ordinances that are awaiting approval.

These legislation seek to increase the honoraria of barangay tanods and Barangay Emergency Response Team members by P2,000.
