Melindo makes ring comeback vs. Gandionco

FORMER International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight champion Milan Melindo makes his much-anticipated ring comeback on April 2, 2022 in a bantamweight contest against Macrea Gandionco in Zamboanga City.Melindo is currently training in Zamboanga City and is now with Go for Gold Zamboanga Valientes MLV. He’s once again teammates with fellow former ALA Boy Jonas Sultan.“I’ve been training really hard right now compared to my previous training camp. I have been training to improve my skill level,” Melindo, who’s been itching to return since the closure of the ALA Gym in 2020, told SunStar Cebu. The 34-year-old Melindo will fight at bantamweight for this fight but will move down to super flyweight, in which he hopes to get a rematch with World Boxing Association (Super) and World Boxing Council (Franchise) super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada.“I’ll fight at 118 for now but I will move down to 115 after this fight,” he said. “Jonas (Sultan) will be at 118 and I will be at 115 so that I can have a rematch with Estrada.”Melindo fought Estrada in 2013 for the WBA and World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight titles in Macau. Estrada beat Melindo via unanimous decision.Melindo was shocked that he was matched with Gandionco because the latter’s father was a dear friend, who closely followed his career in his amateur days.“I have no reason to fight him because his father was my friend. But he’s the one who challenged me. Maybe he wants a shortcut to the top because I already have a name. I have no choice but to fight him. So no mercy at all, but I won’t take him lightly because he’s very hungry for a win,” said Melindo. “We’re very good friends with his father. Wherever I fought when I was still an amateur, his father was there.”Gandionco lost his last four contests. His last fight was in 2019, in which he lost to Perjohn Alipio by unanimous decision.Melindo is 37-5 with 13 knockouts, while Gandionco is 13-11-3 with eight knockouts.
