Neri: Young grandmas

There was a time when the typical grandmother was pictured as a kindly, gray-haired woman whose main preoccupation was to spoil her grandchildren with yummies and toys. The spoiling bit is still true of today’s grandmas but the typical grandmother look has changed. Grandmas nowadays are smart and stylish as well as energetic and empowered. We asked three young grandmas to talk about grandmotherhood.Glenna Fernan Guidecelli is a first-time grandmother with a 1 1/2-year-old granddaughter named Gianna Francesca, the first child of daughter Giorgia and husband Ian Dato. Grandma is over the top with excitement recording every milestone in Gianna’s life. She said: “It’s a wonderful feeling watching baby Gianna’s transition every day. Seeing her smile, eat, walk and talk gives me priceless joy, most specially her hugs. Her hugs and kisses give me the energy and power to be on-the-go.”Glenna is a proud grandma who declares that Gianna has made her life more interesting because she has given her the drive to play, dance, sing and more. Yes, the little angel makes her feel vibrantly alive and gives her positive vibes. She tries her best not spoil Gianna so that “her parents will not have a challenging time raising her.”***June Alegrado has always been the young-looking Mom who could pass for the sibling of her children. Becoming a grandmother added to her youthful outlook because with two grandkids, three-year-old Xanti and three-month-old Cleo (children of her son Domiku Ugarte and wife Evangeline Hayco), she said she gets to do “kid stuff” again. She happily shared: “Grandmotherhood offers me a free pass to act silly around my grandkids. We sing, dance, read, draw, swim, fish, explore, enjoy the beauty around us. I have rediscovered the world by being able to see it through Xanti’s eyes. Little small things taken for granted like bugs, leaves, sand, shells—I simply forget to look but hanging around with Xanti makes me realize the magic of it all.”June admits to being somewhat of a spoiler but she doesn’t over indulge them materially. She respects the boundaries and follows the routine set by the parents. However, she gives her grandkids all her attention along with unconditional love, and lots of hugs and kisses.***Celeste Michael Miranda is grandmother to three pretty girls. Two of them, Matilda Grace (6 1/2 years old), and Madeleine Claire (1 1/2 years old) live in Australia with their parents Alberto and Kina (Buendia) Miranda, while one, Milana Celeste (three years old), stays here in Cebu with her parents Ernie and Iuliia (Prilepova) Miranda. Lesty basks in her grandma role as she goes about babysitting and playing with her girls. She fondly talked about her grandkids: “I love seeing their creative minds at work while they play and answer me wittily. I enjoy falling asleep with them and preparing play areas for them. I like them to experience everything so they start finding themselves reading, playing, art, swimming. I enjoy it when their eyes light up with excitement.”Lesty jokingly disclosed that grandmotherhood has turned her into a “sucker.” The moment the grandkids tell her they love her or give her a hug, they can ask anything from her because she just couldn’t say no. “I could say I do spoil them a lot but I consider the parents’ boundaries, and support their style of discipline.”
