NLEX looks to advance to semifinals with win over Alaska in Governors’ Cup QFs

THE NLEX Road Warriors look to send the Alaska Aces on their way as they clash in the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals on March 16 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Road Warriors have a twice-to-beat advantage over the Aces by virtue of their second-place finish after the elimination round. NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao, though, is well aware of the difficulties that come when facing a team like Alaska, especially when the Aces are intent on giving their farewell conference a championship sendoff. Alaska had earlier announced that this conference would be their very last in the PBA, ending a long 30-year campaign.“Alaska would certainly like to go out in a blaze of glory. It’s a big motivation to have coming into the game,” Guiao said on the PBA’s official website. “That means it’s going to be high intensity, they’re going to be very aggressive. So we’re going to have to carve out a win. It won’t look like our first game. It’s going to be a lot closer.”NLEX handily defeated Alaska in their lone meeting this conference, 106-89.However, one major difference from that game is the absence of the Road Warriors’ prolific import KJ McDaniels, who flew back to the United States to tend to the birth of his child. In his place is new import, Cameron Clark.Alaska head coach Jeffrey Cariaso, meanwhile, remains defiant despite the odds he and his team face.“I think regardless of who we face, we know it’s always going to be a tough fight, especially knowing that you have to beat them twice,” said Cariaso.
