Pages: Busy sports week

Attorney Michelle Mendez-Palmares is the president of the IBP (Integrated Bar of the Philippines) Cebu City chapter. This week, together with other lawyers from Cebu, they successfully hosted the IBP Regional Conference that included chapters from Western and Eastern Visayas.

The six-day long IBP activity included two days of sports: golf, badminton, chess, bowling, tennis, billiards and basketball. I had the chance to watch the thrilling basketball finals at the Capitol Parish gym on Oct. 12 between two Cebu IBP teams. It was also good to attend the awarding on Oct. 14 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino and to meet many friends (all attorneys) that included Elaine Bathan, Regal Oliva, Mark Avila, Grace Hermosa, Yasmine Moller, John Ungab, Georgia Klepp, Jephte Romea and Gimbo Hernaez, among many others.

CEBU MARATHON. It’s the last day for Early Bird registration today. You may visit the Facebook page or website or you can drop by SM Seaside City Cebu to register onsite. The perfect way to start 2023 is by joining the marathon. Distances offered include 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K.

CEBU FOOTBALL CLUB played yesterday and the other Sunday. They’ll play two more before October ends. What a treat for Cebuano soccer fanatics—the chance to witness top-caliber games at the South Road Properties. Thanks to Ugur Tasci, the visionary behind the CFC and Dynamic Herb-Borromeo Sports Complex.

BEBE ALCOSEBA. Birthday greetings to one of the most fascinating people that I’ve known: Justina “Bebe” Alcoseba, who celebrated her 102nd birthday last week. Yes, you read it right: Lola Bebe was born in 1920. But it’s not just her longevity but how active, witty and happy she still is. During her birthday party at White Sands, Lola Bebe stood for 30 minutes giving an extemporaneous speech about life, family and love. Lola Bebe is my dad’s auntie… and my dad’s mom, Lola Bing Pages, will be celebrating her 100th birthday in April. The Demerry sisters are amazing.

CESAFI OPENING. Yesterday was the start of Cebu’s top school-based league. Glad to know that the games are back to pre-pandemic schedules. Looking forward to exciting games ahead, including our alma mater, UP Cebu.

GUV CUP. No less than Gov. Gwen Garcia opened the 1 Cebu Island Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup last Sept. 24 when she declared to the full-packed audience at the Mandaue Sports Complex, “We’re back!”

Three years after the last edition of the GUV Cup, the competition that involves all LGUs of the Province of Cebu has returned to action this October.

So far, three full weekends have been devoted to the GUV Cup. The games last Oct. 1 and 2 were held in Minglanilla; on Oct. 8 and 9, in Boljoon; this weekend, the venue is Alcantara. The elimination games will continue every weekend until Nov. 13.

Cebu Volleyball Association president Chad Salimbangon is the man at the helm of organizing this event. Kudos also goes to Cebu’s top Provincial Board member who started this in 2005: Glenn Anthony Soco.
