Vicelles destroys Claveras in opening round

WORLD-ranked light flyweight Mark Vicelles kicked off his 2022 campaign with a bang after a first-round knockout win over former world title challenger Richard Claveras in the main event of “Kumbati 12” last Saturday, March 26, at the IPI Compound in Mandaue City.Vicelles made quick work of Claveras and stopped him in the 1:48 mark of the opening round. Vicelles knocked down Claveras with a counter left straight. He dropped him again with a left hook. Claveras survived the second knockdown but Vicelles immediately pounced on him, unleashing some heavy lefts and rights, forcing referee Romar Embodo to stop the fight.“I want to challenge for a world championship. I think I’m ready for it. I want to fight Kenshiro (Teraji). I would also like to the fight the Mexican (Esteban Bermudez). I’m also willing to fight anybody as long as it’s for a world championship,” the 26-year-old Vicelles said after the fight.Vicelles is currently rated No. 5 by the WBC, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF), and No. 15 by the World Boxing Association (WBA).Teraji (19-1, 11 KOs) is the current WBC light flyweight champion after winning the belt again in his rematch with Masamichi Yabuki last March 19. Jonathan Gonzalez (25-3-1, 14 KOs) is the WBO light flyweight titleholder, while the IBF title is currently vacant. Hiroto Kyoguchi (15-0, 10 KOs) is the light flyweight division’s WBA Super champion, while Bermudez (14-3-2, 10 KOs) is the regular titleholder.Vicelles remained unbeaten and improved to 16-0-1 with nine knockouts, while the 33-year-old Claveras dropped to 19-9-2 with 16 knockouts.On the other hand, Franco Serafica (8-1, 4 KOs) beat Rimon Rama (6-5-1, 4 KOs) by unanimous decision in the show’s main supporting bout. The scores were 58-56-58-56 and 59-55.In the undercard, Benny Cañete (5-0, 4 KOs) demolished John Kenan Villaflor (8-9-4, 2 KOs) in the first round and Ramil Roda (0-0-1) settled to a split draw with Marvin Rusiana (0-2-1).
