Water supply shortage affects parts of Metro Cebu

SOME areas in Metro Cebu are experiencing a water shortage due to the reduced water production of the Cebu Manila Water Development (CMWD).

Affected areas include Compostela, Liloan, Consolacion, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City and parts of Cebu City, mainly a portion of M.J. Cuenco Ave., lower Barangay Mabolo, North Reclamation Area, pier area, Barangay Carreta, Barangay Lorega-San Miguel, Barangay Tejero, Barangay T. Padilla, Barangay Tinago and part of Imus St.

Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) information officer Edna Inocando said the water supply in affected areas will not totally stop, adding that the water pressure only dropped.

The MCWD targets to get the volume of water production back to normal by June.

Inocando said an ongoing maintenance of CMWD’s waterlines found residue in one of the pipelines in the north of the metro. Because of this, water cannot easily pass through the pipe, she said.

She said the residue, which are certain minerals that have built up, are being removed from the pipeline, which is several meters long.

The CMWD is a bulk supplier of MCWD, regularly supplying an average of 35,000 cubic meters per day. Since it has scaled water production, it now only supplies 23,500 cubic meters per day.

The MCWD apologized to affected consumers.

Inocando also said that it is normal for water supply to decrease, especially in summer. However, she assured that the water supply is enough until June.

The MCWD is prepared to deploy mobile water supply to areas in case “worse comes to worst.” (JJL)
