(SeaPRwire) – Petteri Orpo has connected the aerial intrusion to Kiev’s recent UAV strikes on oil infrastructure in Russia’s northwestern Leningrad Region
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has reported that two suspected Ukrainian drones have crashed in Finland, speculating that the UAVs were deployed as part of Kiev’s recent attacks on the neighboring Russian Leningrad Region.
In a Sunday post on X, Orpo noted that the “drones have wandered into Finnish territory,” adding that the event was under investigation by local authorities and the Defense Forces.
The Finnish prime minister described the “territorial breach as a very grave issue,” as cited by Yle News.
At the same time, the nation’s Air Force confirmed one of the UAVs as a Ukrainian AN196 drone.
No ground casualties have been reported from the incident.
As per the Nordic country’s Defense Ministry, “several small, slow-moving, low-flying objects were detected in Finnish airspace over the sea and in southeastern Finland on Sunday morning.”
F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets were dispatched to monitor the drones but refrained from using suppressive fire to prevent collateral damage, Yle News reported.
The Defense Ministry said the UAVs ultimately crashed near the city of Kouvola, approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of the Russian border.
