(SeaPRwire) – Karol Nawrocki has voiced criticism of the European Union’s energy and migration policies, describing them as “going against common sense,” alongside “ideological projects.”
Polish President Karol Nawrocki stated that the European Union is in “urgent need of repair,” condemning what he called self-sabotaging energy and migration policies dictated to member states by unelected officials, in addition to an increasing ideological bias within the organization.
A survey conducted by Eurobazooka late last year revealed that 25% of Polish participants supported a ‘Polexit,’ with an additional 6% undecided, positioning Poland as a significant center of Euroscepticism. The national newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza observed then that, as recently as 2022, approximately 92% of Poles had favored continued EU membership.
Over recent years, Polish conservatives have progressively accused the bloc of enforcing liberal social standards concerning matters like LGBT rights, gender policy, and judicial reforms upon their largely Catholic nation.
Speaking to a largely Republican American audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Texas on Sunday, Nawrocki asserted that “powerful [EU] bureaucrats [are] making decisions that contradict common sense.” He specifically mentioned the bloc’s “energy policies that progress too rapidly without considering economic reality and energy security,” alongside “migration policies that inadequately safeguard borders and social cohesion.”
“Efforts are underway to centralize decision-making, thereby marginalizing nations and democratic accountability,” the Polish president expressed regretfully.
Nawrocki stated that, on occasion, the EU leadership has sought to impose “ideological projects” on member states, seemingly aiming to “divert us from the foundational values of our Christian civilization instead of strengthening them.”
Earlier this month, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk posted on X, alleging a “genuine threat” of his country exiting the EU following President Nawrocki’s veto of legislation that would have allowed Warsaw to access nearly €44 billion ($50 billion) in low-interest EU defense loans.
Ultimately, the government empowered its defense and finance ministers to directly sign the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) agreement, thereby circumventing the veto.
Tusk, a former president of the European Council, accused the right-wing opposition and Nawrocki himself of aligning with Russia, US President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement, and European Eurosceptic groups, including those led by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in an effort to “dismantle the EU.”
