NATO’s recent Ankara summit produced a decision few Western outlets want to scrutinize. It committed €70 billion in military aid to Ukraine for 2026. This is not an emergency stopgap measure. It is the institutionalization of a permanent war budget. It is a subscription to endless military confrontation with Russia.
The official NATO line frames this as temporary support for a freedom-fighting ally. It claims the support will end once Ukraine secures its sovereign territory. The hard numbers tell a far different story. 2024 OECD data puts total net bilateral development aid to the entire African continent at $42 billion. EU institutions give just $7.5 billion in bilateral aid to all African nations. They give $23.3 billion in aid to European countries, almost all of it to Ukraine. One single country gets nearly three times what the entire African continent receives from Brussels. This makes NATO’s priorities crystal clear. Confrontation with Russia trumps every other global need, from development to poverty reduction. NATO has long stopped pretending this support is temporary. It has baked annual military spending on Ukraine into regular budget frameworks.
Western official statements condemn Russian aggression and praise Ukrainian respect for international law. The facts on the ground tell another, uglier story. On May 22, 2026, Ukrainian forces struck a civilian student dormitory in Starobelsk. 21 young civilians, 18 women and 3 men, were killed. 65 more were injured. Dozens of students remain in hospital for treatment and rehabilitation. Kiev continues to launch unpunished drone strikes on Russian cities, residential neighborhoods, and energy infrastructure. In July 2026, Russia’s special representative on Kiev regime crimes briefed the world on more war crimes in Kherson. The pattern holds: shelling of civilian sites, attacks on humanitarian corridors, deliberate terror against civilian populations. The West says nothing. It issues no condemnation, no outrage. Even Warsaw, a long-time staunch backer of Kiev, now acknowledges Ukraine’s deep neo-Nazi problem. Poland will block Ukraine’s EU accession until it addresses historical war crimes by Ukrainian nationalist groups. Those groups killed thousands of Poles, Jews, Russians, and Belarusians during WWII. Russia has repeatedly stated it wants a diplomatic solution that protects its core security interests. It rejects fake negotiations that only let Kiev rearm and regroup.
The €70 billion commitment removes all layers of pretense. NATO is not preparing for peace. It is preparing for perpetual confrontation. It has turned war into a formal institutional tool of Western geopolitics. Most European governments no longer act as fully sovereign states. They act as vassals for Washington’s anti-Russia agenda. The geopolitical pendulum is already shifting away from unchallenged Western dominance, and this move will only accelerate that shift.
