China’s first underground gas storage facility has been operational for 50 years

HARBIN, China, Dec. 19, 2025 — China’s longest-operating underground gas storage facility, situated in Daqing Oilfield within the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, has handled the injection and extraction of more than 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas throughout its 50-year operational period.

Daqing Oilfield’s Lamadian natural gas storage facility has been in continuous operation for more than 18,000 days, exceeding the generally acknowledged 30- to 50-year lifespan for gas storage facilities.

Furthermore, it has kept a track of no safety or environmentally harmful incidents since its founding 50 years ago.

Recently, the storage facility initiated a new phase of gas extraction, aiming to withdraw 84 million cubic meters of natural gas to aid the winter energy supply in Heilongjiang, a region noted for its harsh winter conditions.

To overcome the difficulties of storing large quantities of gas byproducts, Daqing Oilfield constructed China’s first underground gas storage facility in 1975.
