(SeaPRwire) – Advancing AR Eyewear with Innovative LCoS Microdisplay Technology
TAINAN, Taiwan, April 22, 2026 — Himax Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: HIMX) (“Himax” or the “Company”), a premier fabless semiconductor manufacturer specializing in display drivers, today announced it will reveal its latest high-contrast miniature LCoS microdisplay breakthroughs at Display Week 2026. These advancements feature superior contrast, better optical efficiency, and system-level improvements designed for next-gen AR glasses. Dr. Kuan-Yu Chen, Himax’s senior technical manager, will give a detailed presentation titled “High-Contrast Dual-Edge Color-Sequential Front-lit LCoS with Local Dimming Concept for AR Glasses” during Session 36.5 on May 6. Display Week, organized by the Society for Information Display (SID), is a top-tier industry event taking place in Los Angeles from May 3 to May 8, 2026.
The Company’s exclusive Dual-Edge Front-lit LCoS microdisplay offers exceptional optical efficiency, packing illumination optics and the LCoS panel into a tiny 0.09 c.c. footprint weighing just 0.2 grams. It achieves up to 350,000 nits of brightness and 1 lumen of output with only 200mW of power. With a 720 × 720 resolution and a compact design, this LCoS solution provides an ideal balance of weight, image quality, size, power usage, and cost.
Through proprietary material and process refinements, Himax has increased Full On Full Off (FOFO) contrast from 250:1 to 450:1, resulting in significantly sharper clarity and readability in various lighting environments. Furthermore, the inclusion of Himax’s new Dynamic Light Modulation (DLM) technology boosts FOFO contrast to over 1000:1 and eliminates the “postcard effect” often seen in dark settings. These features make the display perfect for lightweight, all-day AR wearables.
“Following the successful introduction of our Front-lit LCoS microdisplay at Display Week 2025, we are returning this year with an upgraded solution that sets a new benchmark for contrast and system integration,” said Jordan Wu, CEO of Himax. “These developments bring us much closer to providing the ideal microdisplay for mass-market AR glasses.”
