The study, titled the "Master Plan for the Optimal Facilities and Logistics Required to Export Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia from India(1)," was conducted under the FY2023 Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation supplementary program commissioned by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). A report(2) was published by METI.As initiatives for decarbonization take place, there are growing expectations for green hydrogen and ammonia produced using renewable energy, but reducing the costs of full-scale implementation has been identified as an issue.In this study, MHI analyzed the economic viability of the value chain in a scenario where green ammonia is produced in India, a country with highly cost-competitive renewable energy, and utilized for electricity and bunkering (supply of fuel to ships) in Singapore. The analysis was conducted based on production data and local information provided by cooperating partners such as Hygenco, an Indian developer of green ammonia. The results of the study indicated that if the overall value chain is optimized, dramatic cost reductions can be expected. Hygenco is also developing a green ammonia project in Odisha, India's east coast, with an annual production capacity of 1.1 million tons.Based on the analysis results, MHI and operators in India and Singapore discussed issues that need to be resolved to realize the business opportunities for the production and utilization of this green energy. MHI also engaged with the Indian and Singaporean governments, proposing measures for production, introduction, and demand creation for green ammonia, explaining the need for a master plan to establish a value chain, and working on the formulation of the plan. Through more than 100 hours of operation, the following have been completed to support practical application.Year-round operation was conducted to evaluate performance under various atmospheric conditions, including electrical output, generation efficiency, and emissions performance.Operation strategies were established for abnormal combustion, a major challenge due to the characteristics of hydrogen.(2)Using the prototype generator set representative of a near-commercial product, the ability to handle sudden fluctuations in power demand that may occur during actual operation was verified.Various measurements including engine vibration and combustion chamber temperature were taken to confirm that there are no issues with reliability.The process from receipt of green hydrogen produced in Yamanashi Prefecture(3) at the Sagamihara Plant to using it for power generation was confirmed.With these achievements, all evaluations have been completed except for a long-term durability assessment, which is difficult to conduct at present because of hydrogen supply constraints. This demonstrates that the generator set has reached commercially viable technology readiness.Reciprocating engines, due to their ability to run on various fuels, are expected to play an important role in the energy transition towards a carbon-free society. Among these, 100% hydrogen engine generator sets, which use pure hydrogen as fuel and emit no CO2 during combustion, contribute substantially to the decarbonization of distributed power systems.MHIET has established a development cycle at its Sagamihara Plant that integrates design, manufacturing, and demonstration testing for hydrogen engine generator sets, enabling immediate incorporation of findings from successive demonstration tests into final products. Going forward, MHIET will continue to pursue product development with the aim of realizing a decarbonized society through widespread use of hydrogen.(1) A set of equipment required to generate electricity using a hydrogen engine, including a generator mounted on the engine's output shaft, auxiliary equipment (piping systems for fuel gas, lubricating oil, cooling water, intake and exhaust gas, and a generator control panel) required to operate the generator set, and enclosures that house and protect the engine, generator, and auxiliary equipment.(2) Compared to natural gas, hydrogen is highly combustible, can be ignited with energy comparable to static electricity, and has a wide combustion range. It is expected to support the establishment of communication links in mountainous areas and disaster-affected regions, real-time transmission of location information from various types of mobility, and future applications such as autonomous driving, thereby representing a major step toward the realization of NTN.BackgroundIn NTN, satellite communications enable high-speed connectivity even in environments where terrestrial mobile communications are difficult, such as mountainous areas, offshore locations, remote islands, and disaster-affected regions. On the other hand, NTN planar antennas for satellite communication user terminals require tracking functionality for satellites and HAPS*5. This tracking function generates significant heat, making high thermal conductivity and effective heat dissipation essential. In addition, further miniaturization and weight reduction are essential in order to mount satellite communication user terminals on diverse mobility platforms. To address these challenges, the four parties have been jointly conducting R&D on materials with both high thermal conductivity and low weight, along with the design, molding, integration, and evaluation of heat dissipation devices.AchievementsNICT, Sharp, Mitsubishi Chemical, and TECHLAB jointly achieved a 47% reduction in the weight of an NTN planar antenna through a new heat dissipation device design. In this achievement, NICT identified design guidelines for lightweight heat dissipation devices based on the weight and thermal conductivity challenges of conventional aluminum heat dissipation devices for planar antennas and conducted R&D on the composition of the novel composite material and the device structure adopted in this work (see Figure 1).Mitsubishi Chemical developed the carbon fiber prepreg and graphite sheet materials used in the composite material, while TECHLAB established the design and molding technology for a heat dissipation device using the composite material. This enabled the fabrication of a CFRP heat dissipation device that takes advantage of the material’s low weight and high thermal conductivity, achieving a device weight of less than 1 kg. Sharp then integrated this CFRP heat dissipation device into the NTN planar antenna and achieved a 47% weight reduction (5.5 kg to 2.9 kg) (see Figure 2, Figure 3). Evaluation of antenna characteristics confirmed that differences in the radiation pattern were within the measurement error range of the terminal and that there was no difference in receive gain characteristics.Furthermore, the newly developed NTN planar antenna was integrated with a modem and other components, and operation was confirmed as a satellite communication user terminal. This demonstrated that a much lighter satellite communication user terminal can be realized, falling within the payload capacity of widely used industrial drones, and can be directly mounted and operated on a wide range of mobility platforms, including drones and vehicles, thereby expanding the range of applicable mobility platforms.Future ProspectsGoing forward, the partners will conduct more detailed evaluations of heat dissipation performance and mountability, while studying optimal heat dissipation device designs for different terminal configurations and applications.
