2 cities go after vandals amid beautification efforts

APU-LAPU City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan has promised to give a cash reward to those who can report and catch individuals committing vandalism in the city.

Chan believes the reward will stop vandalism as the City Government continues to beautify roads starting with the nature and wildlife themed murals along M.L. Quezon Avenue done by the Mactan Artist Guild.

The mayor recounted that he had walls along the streets of Barangay Poblacion towards barangays Gun-ob, Pajo, Pusok and Ibo, all the way to Barangay Mactan painted white in 2022 in preparation for the city’s plan to have murals painted.

“Since then, I can’t really understand what is the goal of these people who commit vandalism,” said Chan in Cebuano.

Reward

Chan said he is prepared to spend P10,000 of his own money to reward anyone who can provide information on the people vandalizing fences and walls along the city’s roads.

He is also offering a P30,000 reward for those who can catch the vandals in the act and arrest them.

The mayor urged everyone not to be afraid to report vandals to the authorities as he assured them that their identities will not be disclosed.

Prison

Vandals and other individuals who commit acts of malicious mischief detrimental to the implementation of Lapu-Lapu City’s “clean and green” project have to pay up to P5,000 as penalties and may face imprisonment, according to the City’s ordinance.

Cebu City

Meanwhile, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has vowed to strictly enforce the city’s anti-vandalism ordinance after noting numerous walls in the streets had been defaced.

Lieutenant Colonel Janette Rafter, CCPO deputy city director for operations, said all 11 police stations in the city were ordered to monitor vandals.

“We wish to inform that vandalism in public places or private establishments, if you are caught violating the Anti-Vandalism Ordinance of 2018, will carry a penalty of at least P3,000 and the highest is P8,000. Aside from that, the violator will be charged in court,” Rafter said in Cebuano.

Rafter welcomed the idea of Councilor Edgardo Labella II to install CCTV cameras in areas where vandalism often occurs.

Rafter urged the public to help stop vandalism in order to achieve Mayor Michael Rama’s vision for the city to become like Singapore. (MKG, AYB, TPT)
