CDU celebrates 50th anniversary

JAN. 31 was a grand day for the Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) as it marked its 50th milestone celebration with the theme, “Years of Excellence in Transformative Healthcare Education.”

The opening salvo was held at the university, led by the president, Dr. Philip Anthony Sto. Domingo Larrazabal; vice president for finance, Bettina Anne Larrazabal-Veloso; vice president for academics, Dr. Enrico B. Gruet; vice president for administration, Dr. Stanley Clark M. Dipay; together with other members of the board.

The 50th opening salvo detailed the university’s plans to make the celebration last for a whole year, integrated into other events organized by the university like intramurals, Awit at Sayaw, quiz bowls, University Week, etc.

CDU also plans to hold medical missions that are tailored to each of their colleges, such as free eye checkups (College of Optometry), free bloodletting and donations (Medical Technology), free circumcisions or surgical missions (College of Medicine), and free dental care services (College of Dentistry).

All of these will take place alongside the university’s yearlong 50th celebration.

Started as a nursing academy in 1973, the prestigious institution has been providing transformative practice towards education that would later result in an extensive approach for offering other healthcare-related courses along its development.

After over five decades, it has made a reputable name for itself—one that makes it a state-of-the-art university for healthcare.

Such a reputation would even serve as additional mileage for foreign hospitals to readily accept graduates from the university, knowing that their performances through academic and on-field deployments have already been proven and tested over the years since it was first established.

“Others might scrutinize application letters, but when they know that these people came from CDU, they are easily accepted. We were able to get the formula right—the CDU formula that we can apply to all of our courses,” Larrazabal said.

At present, CDU is linked with plenty of hospitals like the Cebu North and South General Hospitals, Mactan Doctors’ Hospital, San Carlos Doctors Hospital, San Lorenzo Ruiz College of Ormoc, and other sister hospitals that are located outside the country.

The institution’s progression speaks volumes not just within the students and its educational value, but also through its faculty. Budget Lubguban Sulit, head of community outreach services, has served for 12 years and has witnessed a tremendous overhaul among the institutions teaching excellence and management that would be on par with other global institutions.

Sulit even highlighted the university’s thoughtfulness at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and the onslaught of Typhoon Odette (Rai) because not a single employee was left without a job.

“No one was left behind,” he said.

Cebu Doctors’ University’s growth has become a spectacular role model towards healthcare institutional standards as it aims to continue chasing excellence and quality improvement for the next 50 years. With this, it is of no doubt that it is one of the leading healthcare universities here in Cebu. (SPONSORED CONTENT)
