Ex-councilor alcover nabbed for cyberlibel

FORMER Cebu City councilor Pastor “Jun” Alcover Jr. was arrested in his home in Veterans Drive, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City on Thursday evening, March 3, 2022 for two counts of cyberlibel filed against him by former city administrator Floro Casas Jr.The 69-year-old Alcover posted a bail of P10,000 for each count of cyberlibel for his temporary liberty on Friday morning, March 4.Alcover is running again for Cebu City councilor in the north district this coming May elections under the slate of Mayor Michael Rama.The politician said in a radio dyLA interview that Casas is the lone complainant.Before learning that Casas was the complainant, Alcover said he had no idea who filed a complaint against him. He was surprised when members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Cebu Provincial Field Unit (CIDG Cebu) arrived to implement the arrest order.In an interview with reporters at the CIDG Cebu office, Alcover said he had no idea of anybody who would file a case against him, nor suspecting someone behind the move.“I still didn’t know. I was just surprised because there was no hearing and I did not receive a subpoena. The warrant came out automatically,” Alcover said in Cebuano.Maj. Mark Eteroza of CIDG Cebu said they immediately served the arrest warrant issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 11 Judge Ramon Daomilas Jr. of Cebu City after receiving it earlier on Thursday.Alcover was brought to the CIDG Cebu office in Cebu City for police booking procedure, including taking of his mug shots.Eteroza, however, has set aside politics as the reason behind Alcover’s arrest.“We are not aware that he is running.
