Footage shows a scene reminiscent of science fiction: spherical robots patrolling alongside police officers.
Logon Technology, a Chinese robotics company, introduced the RT-G autonomous spherical robot, describing it as a technological advancement designed for assisting or replacing humans in hazardous situations.
These spherical robots are amphibious, functioning on both land and water.
The company states that the robots can achieve speeds up to 35 km/h (approximately 22 mph) and withstand impacts of up to 8,818 pounds (4 tons).
Video shared by a TikTok user depicts a large spherical robot patrolling Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.
This large robot was accompanied by four officers on the busy streets of Hangzhou, a city with a population nearing 12 million.
In addition to its imposing presence, the robot boasts advanced technological capabilities.
According to Logon Technology, the robots utilize sophisticated AI.
The company explains that the RT-G will aid law enforcement by identifying and apprehending criminals using advanced AI and facial recognition technology.
China’s adoption of robots in law enforcement exemplifies a global trend of integrating technology with traditional policing methods to improve public safety.
In the U.S., the NYPD unveiled robotic dogs in April 2023.
“We want the public to know that the use of these technologies will be transparent, consistent, and always done in collaboration with the people that we serve,” NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell stated at the unveiling.
These robotic dogs are intended to assist the NYPD in investigating high-risk or dangerous incidents.
