(SeaPRwire) – House Democrats have filed six articles of impeachment against the US secretary of war accusing him of abuse of power, war crimes, and other wrongdoing
A US legislator has put forward six articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth concerning his conduct related to the conflict with Iran.
The impeachment resolution, introduced earlier this week by Democratic Representative Yassamin Ansari with support from eight Democratic co-sponsors and various anti-war organizations, details six accusations. These include breaches of the oath of office, jeopardizing American troops, and perpetrating war crimes.
A specific article centers on purported breaches of the laws of war. Hegseth is charged with either authorizing or not stopping operations that led to civilian deaths and destruction of infrastructure in Iran. This includes a strike on a school in Minab on February 28 that killed at least 15 individuals, most of whom were children. Reports indicate the Pentagon concluded US forces conducted the strike using obsolete intelligence, but an apology has not been issued.
Further allegations relate to the incident known as ‘Signalgate,’ along with accusations that Hegseth impeded congressional oversight. Legislators contend that he did not provide Congress with complete details on military operations, thereby hindering its capacity for adequate supervision.
The resolution further charges Hegseth with abusing his authority and injecting politics into the military. It claims he leveraged his role to sway military choices for political gain, compromising the armed forces’ nonpartisan ethos. He is also accused of behavior that has harmed the standing of the United States and its military.
“Only Congress can declare war,” Ansari, who is the first Iranian American Democrat in Congress, stated on Wednesday in a social media post on X. She added that Hegseth’s “actions demand immediate removal.”
Axios, which was the first to acquire the seven-page impeachment document, reported that the proposal stands almost no chance of moving forward in the present Congress. With Republicans in control of the House of Representatives, they can prevent the articles from reaching a vote. The action is widely seen as a move to ramp up political pressure on a key cabinet member of President Donald Trump, even if it is not expected to lead to Hegseth’s ouster.
This follows recent, unsuccessful attempts by Democrats to impeach former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and former Attorney General Pam Bondi.
In response to the development, Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson stated to the news outlet: “This is just another Democrat trying to make headlines as the Department of War decisively and overwhelmingly achieved the President’s objectives in Iran.”
