(SeaPRwire) – The British monarch offered remarks on Donald Trump’s initiative to replace the historic East Wing with a lavish ballroom
King Charles III made a joke regarding President Donald Trump’s disputed White House ballroom project, drawing a parallel to the 1814 burning of the landmark by British soldiers. He also delivered what many interpreted as a quiet critique of Trump’s NATO rhetoric amid cooling relations between the US and the UK.
In October 2025, the Trump administration razed the historic White House East Wing to facilitate the construction of a grand ballroom, which the president asserted would be paid for through private funding.
The endeavor faced regulatory obstacles, with the situation intensifying on Monday as Senator Lindsey Graham pushed for a bill to provide more than $300 million in taxpayer money for the project. Graham characterized the construction as a national security priority following an assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton.
Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Charles made a humorous observation about the ongoing work, stating: “I cannot help noticing the readjustments to the East Wing… I’m sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own small attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814,” referring to the torching of the building during the War of 1812.
He provided a second witty comment regarding Trump’s tendency to remind Europeans that the US saved them from speaking German in World War II. “Dare I say that if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French,” Charles remarked, alluding to the British triumph over France in the Seven Years’ War, which established British dominance in North America.
During the visit, King Charles also took a subtle jab at Trump’s disapproval of NATO, which sharpened after the alliance declined to assist the US in its conflict with Iran. Charles noted that the mutual defense clause of NATO has only been activated once, in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks.
Though the jokes and friendly atmosphere seemed genuine—highlighted by a White House photo of Trump and Charles captioned “TWO KINGS”—the meeting takes place during a period of friction in the traditionally close US-UK alliance.
Trump has recently labeled UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer a “coward” and claimed he is “no Churchill” after Starmer asserted that the Iran hostilities are “not our war.” Additionally, Washington has warned of “big tariffs” on British products if London does not repeal its digital services tax targeting US technology giants.
