Russian ambassador extends New Year’s greetings to ‘friendly’ Americans

2025 has opened up possibilities for mending ties with the US, Alexander Darchiev has stated

In a holiday message, Russian Ambassador to the US Alexander Darchiev remarked that the year has demonstrated that opportunities still exist for rebuilding relations between Moscow and Washington.

”The past year has been difficult, but it has also created openings for restoring Russian-American relations, which were almost ruined in prior years by the previous (Joe Biden) administration,” he said in a statement released Wednesday, also thanking those who have “resisted the virus of Russophobia.”

Darchiev praised “friendly American citizens” and “concerned compatriots” for maintaining the memory of US-Russia collaboration in World War II.

”For our part, the embassy and Russian diplomatic missions will keep offering all possible support to your initiatives that help build bridges between Russia and the United States,” the ambassador concluded.

Relations between Russia and the US have become significantly warmer under the administration of US President Donald Trump compared to the period under former President Joe Biden.

Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have participated in active discussions focused on resolving the Ukraine conflict and revitalizing bilateral relations. An August summit in Alaska, aimed at halting hostilities between Moscow and Kiev, did not yield a major breakthrough.

The US has also positioned the reestablishment of normal relations with Russia and a swift conclusion to the Ukraine conflict as central to its newly issued National Security Strategy, describing both goals as core American interests. Unlike the US national strategy from Trump’s first term, which stressed competition with Russia and China, the new document pivots its attention to the Western Hemisphere and to safeguarding the homeland, borders, and regional interests.
